A short era with a long shadow

The Old West of the reels is a brief and heavily dramatised stretch of history. Wikipedia's frontier overview places the Old West at roughly 1865 to 1890, with historians stretching it later, and notes that popular media exaggerated its romance, anarchy and violence. Slots inherit that exaggeration, and the outlaws and sheriffs tend to become the wilds. Most of these games are about what a wild is allowed to do.

Sheriffs, outlaws and duellists

Wild West Gold is the plain version: five reels, four rows, 40 lines, and a sheriff wild on the middle reels carrying a random 2x, 3x or 5x that turns sticky in the free spins. Its Megaways sequel, Wild West Gold Megaways, runs up to 117,649 ways without cascades and is listed at 5,000x against the original's 10,000x.

Dead or Alive 2 puts the decision before the free spins: Train Heist, Old Saloon or High Noon Saloon, from a climbing multiplier to sticky wilds whose multipliers multiply together. Dead or Alive 3: Wanted removes that choice. Its Wanted Wilds carry multipliers, and a Bounty Hunter Wild that covers a reel collects them. Wanted Dead or a Wild from Hacksaw Gaming works differently again: VS symbols expand into DuelReels with their own multipliers, and there are three separate bonus games.

Money Train: the heist as a respin board

Relax Gaming's games spend most of their time elsewhere. Money Train is a 40-line slot whose base game exists to land bonus symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5, which opens the Money Cart on a separate board. The cart gives three respins, resets the counter whenever a new symbol lands, and relies on collector and payer symbols. Money Train 2 adds a respin feature to the base game and up to two extra reels, with a listed ceiling of 50,000x against the first game's 20,000x.

The split is easy to state by pace. Wild West Gold keeps something small happening on every spin. Dead or Alive 2 and 3 wait for the scatter, then play out under rules the wilds set. Money Train and Wanted Dead or a Wild are long waits for a feature that does most of the work.

What the saloon doors do not reveal

The theme says nothing about the numbers. Hacksaw lists four RTP settings for Wanted Dead or a Wild, from 96.38% down to 88.42%. Relax's page for Money Train shows only a German 90% figure, with 96.2% coming from databases. Evolution lists Dead or Alive 2 at 96.80% and Dead or Alive 3 at 96.03%. Maximum wins start at a listed 5,000x and reach 50,000x for Money Train 2, with Dead or Alive 2 higher still: 111,111x in databases, potentially 100,000x on Evolution's page.

The same game can run differently from one operator to the next, as covered in why the same slot can have different RTP. These demos are unmodified studio games on virtual credits.
