Where the Megaways mechanic came from

Big Time Gaming, usually shortened to BTG, is an Australian slot studio founded in 2011 by Nik Robinson and based in Surry Hills, Sydney. Robinson's earlier company, New Tech Media, was sold to News Corp and became part of Openbet, so he came to slots from betting technology. The studio's own history marks 2016 as the turning point: that December it released Bonanza, the first Megaways slot, and it went on to license the mechanic to other developers.

That licensing matters when you browse. A Megaways label does not mean BTG built the game, since other studios use the mechanic under licence. On this page every demo is a BTG title.

Evolution announced on April 12, 2021 that it would buy BTG for up to 450 million euros, including 220 million upfront and an earn-out tied to later results, and the deal completed on July 1, 2021. BTG now operates as a brand inside Evolution. For Ontario, Gaming Intelligence reported that Evolution launched two BTG Megaways titles, Max Megaways and Vegas Megaways, in the province through operator partners. We did not find an AGCO registration notice for BTG itself.

Reels that change size every spin

Megaways gives each of six reels a random number of symbols, from two to seven, which produces up to 117,649 ways to win. Bonanza pairs that with reactions: winning symbols are removed and replaced, so one spin can pay several times. In its free spins the multiplier rises with each reaction and, per the studio, has no ceiling.

Extra Chilli (2018) keeps the same engine and adds a feature drop and an optional gamble for extra free spins. Rasputin Megaways (December 2022) is a disco-themed take where Rasputin Wilds add symbols to reels, and the studio lists up to a million ways, with a Win Exchange that lets you swap a win for spins. Danger High Voltage (2017) is not Megaways. It has six reels and 4,096 ways, built on the Electric Six song, with a choice of two free spins modes.

How to read BTG's maths

All four titles are listed as high volatility. Bonanza is published at 96.00% RTP and Extra Chilli at 96.15% with a listed 20,000x maximum, while Danger High Voltage is listed at 95.67%. When a game can reach tens of thousands of times the stake, most spins return little and a feature round does the heavy lifting, so a long dry stretch is normal rather than a malfunction.
