A Swedish studio that went mobile early
Play'n GO is a Swedish slot studio, and its own start date is murky enough that sources disagree. Some third-party profiles say 1997; a 2022 iGaming Business profile says it was co-founded in 2005 and that it was among the first suppliers to build games for mobile in the mid-2000s. CEO Johan Törnqvist said in a 2022 interview that the company started more than 15 years earlier and now employs over 650 people. We have not found a single founding year stated by the studio itself, so we do not give one.
On its website the studio lists a Great Britain Gambling Commission licence, a Malta Gaming Authority supplier licence and a Gibraltar licence, and it shows logos of test labs including BMM Testlabs and Gaming Laboratories International. For Ontario, Play'n GO announced on March 14, 2022 that it had been awarded a supplier licence by the AGCO ahead of the April 4 market opening. It named Rise of Olympus, Book of Dead, Reactoonz and Tome of Madness as the first titles it planned to offer, and called Ontario the first stage of its North American plans.
One design stance stands out. In that 2022 interview the CEO said the studio does not make bonus buy games, arguing that overly aggressive mechanics are not good for players. That is a statement from 2022, so check a given game's info screen rather than assume.
Expanding symbols, cascades and clusters
Play'n GO's most recognisable family is built on Rich Wilde. Book of Dead (2016) has five reels, ten paylines and a free spins round in which one randomly chosen symbol expands to fill its reel. Legacy of Dead (2020) keeps the randomly chosen expanding symbol in its free spins, with a tomb scatter that also acts as a wild. It is simple on purpose: one feature, and everything depends on which symbol expands.
The studio's grid slots run on a different logic. Reactoonz (2017) is a 7x7 cluster game where cascading wins charge a meter that sends the Gargantoon alien into the grid, and Reactoonz 2 (2020) adds a Fluctometer and a Quantameter on the same 7x7 cluster grid. Moon Princess (2017) uses a 5x5 cascade where three princesses change the grid, and Rise of Olympus (2018) is a Greek-myth grid slot with random Hand of God powers.
At the quieter end, Fire Joker is a three-reel, five-payline fruit machine with a Wheel of Multipliers, and Wild Falls 2 (2022) is a Yukon gold-rush slot with sticky re-spins.
What to expect from the maths
Most of the titles above are generally classed as high volatility. In practice that means a lot of rounds return little, and the features carry most of the variance. Fire Joker, usually classed as medium, is the gentler option.
Play'n GO's own game pages for Book of Dead and Reactoonz describe features but do not state an RTP, volatility class or maximum win, so those figures are not given here. Published figures differ between listings, and listings also report lower RTP settings for some games. Operators choose which version to run, so the figure in the game's own info screen is the one that counts. Our guide covers why the same slot can have different RTP. RTP is a long-run average over very large numbers of rounds and says nothing about a single session.
