Three reels and a gum-machine ancestry

The look on this page traces back to the first coin-operated three-reel machine, which Charles Fey built in San Francisco in 1895, according to California's historical landmark record for the site. The fruit came later. Wikipedia's history of the slot machine says gum-vending attachments put cherries, lemons, oranges and plums on the reels to match the flavours on offer, and that one maker's Operator's Bell carried a stick of Bell-Fruit Gum, the origin of the BAR symbol. In Britain the style gave the fruit machine its name.

That heritage explains why these five games feel spare: few symbols, short paytables, no story. The cherries are a poor guide to the game. The single idea each one adds is a better one.

One twist each

  • Sizzling Hot Deluxe: five reels, five fixed lines, no wild and no free spins. A star scatter pays anywhere, and an optional red-or-black gamble follows wins.
  • Fire Joker: three reels, five lines. A stacked near miss earns a respin on the third reel, and a screen filled with one symbol spins a wheel of multipliers up to x10.
  • Triple Diamond: three reels, nine lines, no scatter. One Triple Diamond wild multiplies a line win by 3x, two by 9x.
  • Twin Spin: five reels and 243 ways, where at least two reels are linked to show identical symbols on every spin.
  • Mega Joker: two sets of reels, a basic game below and a higher-stake Supermeter above, with mystery wins and a random progressive jackpot.

Read by pace, Sizzling Hot Deluxe asks for the least attention, since nothing changes between spins. Fire Joker puts a small event on near misses. Triple Diamond hangs everything on one wild landing on a live line. Twin Spin behaves like a modern ways slot in retro dress, while Mega Joker is the only one with a second tier and a decision about where to carry a win.

Retro looks, uneven numbers

Simple does not mean uniform. NetEnt lists Mega Joker at 99% RTP, but independent reviews say the figure applies only at the top coin level with the Supermeter, and the lower-level figures they quote do not agree, so only the studio's number is shown. Databases list Sizzling Hot Deluxe at 95.66% and Triple Diamond at 95.06%, against 96.55% on NetEnt's sheet for Twin Spin. Maximum wins are modest: 200x for Mega Joker, 1,000x for Twin Spin. Twin Spin's listed hit frequency is 28%, so roughly seven spins in ten return nothing, and with no feature rounds to cushion that, a quiet stretch simply stays quiet.

Operators can run other RTP settings of the same game, which is the subject of why the same slot can have different RTP. The look of a machine says nothing about which setting is running.
