A Stockholm start-up that Evolution bought in 2022

Nolimit City is a slot developer that started in Stockholm and also works from Malta and Gurugram in India, according to the notice Evolution published when it bought the company. Co-founder Jonas Tegman told SBC in 2016 that the business was born out of frustration with how bigger suppliers dealt with operators. Public sources disagree slightly on the founding year, and we have not found an official date, so we leave it at the mid-2010s.

Evolution announced the purchase in June 2022 and completed it in August 2022: EUR 200 million up front, with up to EUR 140 million more tied to earnings. Nolimit City now sits next to NetEnt, Red Tiger and Big Time Gaming in Evolution's slot group. It holds a Malta Gaming Authority licence. For Ontario, Gaming Intelligence reported in March 2022 that the AGCO had approved the studio, with games available from the market's opening on 4 April 2022.

xMechanics, dark humour and very large maximums

The studio's trademark is a set of in-house mechanics it brands xMechanics: xWays, xNudge, xBomb and xSplit. Evolution's own description of the studio mentions provocative themes with a humorous touch, and the catalogue backs that up. These are not family-friendly slots.

Mental 2 is the clearest example. Released on 25 March 2025, it is an asylum-set sequel with Fire Frames and Fire Reels that split symbols into parts, three tiers of free spins chosen by how many scatters land, and a published maximum of 99,999x the bet. Rock Bottom, from November 2022, is quieter in structure: a 576-ways grid, xSplit symbols that double on the middle reels, and two free spins modes, Headshrinker Spins and Insanity Spins. It also has an xCap feature that lets a win above a set threshold be multiplied toward the cap. The grief-as-comedy theme is a matter of taste.

What the volatility and RTP figures mean here

Nolimit City builds for players who accept long quiet stretches. The studio's own Mental 2 page describes the volatility as extreme and mentions long dry spells; its Rock Bottom page lists high volatility and a hit frequency of 31.3%, with free spins arriving about once in 198 spins on average. Those are long-run averages, and a single session can look nothing like them.

The headline RTP the studio publishes is 96.06% for Mental 2 and 96.04% for Rock Bottom. Third-party listings report lower settings for both, which the studio's pages do not mention, so the figure on a given operator's own game page is the one that applies. See why the same slot can have different RTP. The studio also lists a feature buy on Rock Bottom, which not every jurisdiction or operator version offers.
