From a Swedish machine-maker's online arm to an Evolution studio
NetEnt describes itself today as part of Evolution Group, but its roots are older than most online slot studios. A company profile traces it to 1996, when NetEntertainment was started inside the Swedish gaming-machine group Cherry. It separated from Cherry in 2007 and has been listed on the Stockholm exchange since 2009, with its home base in Stockholm and development offices in Malta and other countries.
The ownership story changed in 2020. Evolution announced an offer for NetEnt in June 2020, competition approvals in Malta and the UK followed, and the takeover closed in late 2020, after which NetEnt applied to delist from Nasdaq Stockholm. NetEnt had already bought Red Tiger in 2019, so both studios now sit under Evolution alongside Big Time Gaming. In the studio's own game footers, NetEnt content is supplied under Evolution Gaming Malta Limited's Malta Gaming Authority licence.
For Ontario, the supporting source is an Evolution press release dated April 4, 2022, the day the regulated market opened. It says Evolution and its partner operators were licensed through iGaming Ontario, and it named NetEnt's Starburst and Divine Fortune among the slots available. That is studio-level information; it does not tell you which individual titles are offered in the province today.
What the catalogue is built around
NetEnt's reputation rests on a handful of mechanics that other studios later borrowed. Gonzo's Quest (2010) was an early cascading slot: winning symbols disappear and new ones fall in, lifting a multiplier as the chain continues. Starburst (2012) went the other way and kept things minimal, with wins paid in both directions and a single expanding wild that triggers respins. Twin Spin links at least two reels on every spin across 243 ways, and has no bonus round at all.
Wilds that move or stick are another thread. Jack and the Beanstalk uses walking wilds, Dead or Alive 2 gives a Wild West theme five outlaw wilds and a choice of three free spins modes, and Dead or Alive 3: Wanted brings the series back on a larger grid. Starburst XXXtreme is the high-volatility rework of the original, with multipliers on the wild respins.
Jackpot and old-school titles fill out the range. Divine Fortune and Hall of Gods both feature a jackpot game with a progressive top prize, and Divine Fortune Gold extends the Greek-myth line. Mega Joker is a three-reel fruit machine with a two-level Supermeter, Blood Suckers is a low-volatility vampire slot, and Narcos is based on the Pablo Escobar TV series.
How to read the spread of risk
NetEnt's catalogue does not have one risk profile, and that is the useful thing to know. Starburst and Blood Suckers are listed as low volatility, so wins tend to be frequent and modest. NetEnt's own Blood Suckers page lists a 98% RTP and a 900x maximum win, an unusually high published return. Dead or Alive 2 sits at the other end: Evolution lists it as high volatility with an RTP of 96.80%, which means long quiet stretches are normal and most of the return comes from the features.
Mega Joker is the one to read carefully. NetEnt lists 99% RTP, but third-party commentary says this figure applies to the Supermeter mode at the highest stake, not to the basic game. Figures like these are long-run averages over very large numbers of rounds, not a forecast for a session. Operators can also run other RTP settings for some titles, so the number on the game's own info screen is the one that applies; our guide explains why the same slot can have different RTP.
Several newer releases list a feature buy. Evolution's game pages note that this option and some jackpot features may not be available in every jurisdiction or operator version.
