Gambling Budget and Limits Planner

Start from what you have left after essentials, not from what you would like to spend. The planner turns an amount into limits you can enter at a casino, and treats $0 as a normal result.

The planner is arithmetic, not advice. It cannot tell you what is safe for you. If gambling is causing stress, or you are gambling money you need, call ConnexOntario on 1-866-531-2600 or read how BetGuard self-exclusion works. More: responsible gambling in Ontario.

How to use the planner

Enter your monthly take-home income, the essentials you must pay (rent or mortgage, bills, food, transport, debt payments) and any savings or other commitments. The planner subtracts them and shows what is left. That figure is a ceiling, not a target: any amount above zero is optional and spending nothing is a good plan.

If you are considering a monthly amount, add it. You will get daily, weekly and monthly figures to enter in a casino's deposit-limit settings, rounded down to whole dollars so they never add up to more than your budget. If the amount is more than what is left after essentials and savings, the planner says so. If nothing is left, it tells you the budget is $0.

Only money you can afford to lose

A gambling budget is money you are prepared not to get back. It is not money for rent, bills, food, debt payments or savings, and it is never a way to make up a shortfall. Gambling to recover a loss is the most common way a small loss turns into a large one.

The limit tools at Ontario casinos

Regulated operators must offer these. Setting them up on the day you open an account is easier than doing it after a bad session.

Deposit, loss and time limits
Operators must offer limits over at least 24 hours, 7 days and one month, available at registration and afterwards. When you set several, the lowest applies. Asking to raise a limit means waiting at least 24 hours.
Breaks in play
Short breaks of 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 2 months or 3 months, during which you cannot wager.
Self-exclusion from one operator
Exclusion for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. You are logged out straight away and the operator must stop marketing to you.
BetGuard
Ontario's central self-exclusion program, which blocks you from regulated operators in one step. Read our BetGuard guide for how it works and how to apply.

What a budget cannot do

A limit caps how much you can lose to a casino in a period. It does not make play safer in other ways, and it does not change the odds. The amount you plan to spend is only part of the picture: how often you play, how long, and whether you are chasing losses matter just as much. If you notice you are playing for longer or for more than you meant to, or depositing again after a loss, treat that as a prompt to take a break or talk to someone, whatever the numbers say.

Budget and limits questions

How much should I budget for gambling?

We cannot say what is right for you. The planner shows the ceiling: what is left after essentials and savings. Anything you spend should come from that amount, and zero is a perfectly good choice.

What is the difference between a deposit limit and a loss limit?

A deposit limit caps how much you can add to your account in a period. A loss limit caps your net losses in a period. Where an operator offers both, the lowest limit applies.

Why are the weekly and daily figures lower than I expected?

They are rounded down and spread so that the three limits never add up to more than your monthly total. The 24-hour figure is the smaller of one session and the weekly figure.

Can I raise a limit later?

Operators in Ontario make you wait at least 24 hours after you ask to raise one, so a limit cannot be undone mid-session. Lowering a limit is the safer direction.

What if I have gone over my budget?

Stop for the day and do not try to win it back. If it keeps happening, consider a break or self-exclusion and talk to ConnexOntario on 1-866-531-2600; it is free, confidential and open 24 hours.

Does the planner store my income?

No. Everything stays in your browser and is gone when you close the page.

Play within your limits

Online gambling in Ontario is for adults aged 19 or older who are physically located in the province. Set a deposit limit before you play, and never gamble with money you need for essentials.
